2:22 Adam Do you ever get this, I mean, you're a pretty recognizable guy. The hair and the hat and the look and the vibe and everything. And people come up and talk to you, like people come up and talk to me when I'm doing stuff. But I noticed that the cell phone is no deterrent for people.

2:37 Adam I was talking on the cell phone at the Home Depot today, guy walks right up to me, hey, Adam, what's happening? It's like, I'm talking on the goddamn cell phone. I don't think people count cell phone as a regular phone.

3:15 Adam Now, are you going to be out for the whole gig or are you just coming out to do Beat It and Black and White?

3:26 Adam And so you'll come out, the crowd will go nuts and you'll go into that. Now, do you practice that?

3:34 Slash No. Actually, to tell you the truth, when I got asked to do this, they mentioned that song and I've never played that with Michael before. And so it's sort of a weird song because it's the first time that Eddie Van Halen guested with Michael Jackson.

3:49 Slash Yeah, it's an Eddie Van Halen solo. And so of course, I'm going to just play it my own way, but I haven't practiced it. I'll do it at rehearsal.

3:55 Adam And now, do you play every day? Do you pick up the guitar every day?

4:00 Slash Pretty much, yeah.

4:01 Adam And do you do it for an hour a day or three hours a day or just whenever?

4:06 Slash You know, there's when you're jamming with the band or if you're going in and doing a session or if you were just practicing around the house, that's like for, could be all day long. It could be a couple hours. It could be just half an hour, you know.

4:16 Adam If you didn't have anything coming up and you didn't have any licks to learn or anything like that, would you just pick the guitar up anyway in a normal day?

4:23 Slash Yeah, just writing stuff, you know, whatever. I like to, you know, even if it's just watching TV and just having the guitar in the bedroom all the time, you know.

4:33 Adam You know what I'm talking about playing an instrument? Could there be anything better?

5:19 Slash Just because I finished the Snake Pit record and the house was really big and I bought the house because of the studio. Once I finished the record there, it just seemed like I didn't need the house anymore, so we split.

5:29 Adam And what's going on with Axle and all that? Didn't he come out with a CD or something? Or what the hell is he doing?

5:34 Slash I haven't been keeping up with that. You know, all things considered, I remember there was an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that came out and there's a song in there. But as far as an album is concerned, I'm waiting for the Guns record to come out.

5:47 Adam Yeah. What's up with that?

5:48 Slash I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine.

5:51 Slash Yeah. I'm sure it'll be out at some point. You know, he'll get it together.

5:55 Adam Well, I mean, you guys ever talk? You ever get together?

5:58 Slash No, I haven't talked to him since I quit G&R.

6:01 Slash I think we're over being angry at each other.

6:05 Slash Yeah. It was just one of those things when I left, everything was so disheveled anyway. When I left, it was just like that was sort of the nail in the coffin in our relationship. I just haven't spoke since. Sort of like an ex-girlfriend thing.

6:19 Adam Well, sometimes too, and I don't know if this is true, but with ex-girlfriends it is, you don't want to see the person because it was a humiliating, embarrassing time of your life. Like you're almost ashamed of that the last time you saw him.

7:40 Slash No. They just got hired. It's not their fault.

7:44 Adam Well, I'm curious if there's some guy that Slash knows who plays a guitar who used to be a friend of his and now he went over with Axl to cut the new GNR record and Slash is calling them a traitor.

7:56 Adam No. Nothing like that.

7:58 I'm always just trying to stir it up.

7:59 Slash There was a party just recently and there was a list of all the guests or hosts of this party and there was a couple of the new guys from GNRs. It was like so and so and so and so from Guns N Roses, so and so and so and so from Guns N Roses. My old lady looks at me and she goes, does that bother you? I was like, no, it doesn't. It doesn't really bother me at all. But it was funny at the time.

8:22 Adam Yeah. What do you do? Just copyright the name or he gets the name?

8:26 Slash I don't know. There's a little bit of a debate over that.

8:47 Caller Like two months ago, I had back surgery and they put me on OxyContin.

8:53 Drew Two months ago. You've been on it way too long.

8:57 Caller It's caused me to just be like lose appetite.

9:02 Drew You're addicted to it now, right?

9:04 Slash What's OxyContin?

9:05 Caller No, actually I'm off of it.

9:06 Adam Vicodin. What is OxyContin like? What do you say? It's like Vicodin or a painkiller?

9:12 Drew Yeah. It's a very powerful oral painkiller.

9:14 Slash I've heard of it.

9:15 Drew People are into it these days. Yeah.

9:18 Caller It's also caused me to become like an insomniac too.

9:21 Drew Oh, you're coming off it now. How long have you been off it?

9:24 Caller For about two weeks.

9:25 Drew Oh, well, you're in withdrawal. That withdrawal is going to go on for quite some time. Do you have alcoholism in your family?

9:31 Caller No, not at all.

9:32 Drew Okay. Well, these two weeks, maybe even three weeks, are going to be very uncomfortable. Sleeplessness is part of the deal. It's your brain recovering from the saturation with that drug. If you're an addict, what tends to happen is it triggers a mechanism in your brain that causes you to feel this very intense feeling of loss. If you're not an addict, you should just deal with the withdrawal and that will be that.

9:50 Slash That's the worst thing. It's the first time coming off of something you don't even know it.

9:54 Adam Slash, you seem very lucid tonight. Are you off whatever?

9:58 Slash Am I off whatever?

9:59 Adam I mean, were you ever really on anything?

10:01 Slash I used to have a lot of problems.

10:02 Adam What were you into?

10:04 Slash I used to have a, well, I want to get into a lot of big drug problems.

10:07 Adam But you're cool now?

10:08 Slash Yeah. They just made that switch where I decided it was just too much of a pain in the ass and it was too much of a deterrent for my career and so on and so forth. I finally quit. It was hard. Took a long time, but I did.

10:18 Adam How long have you been sober?

10:20 Slash Probably, well, off that stuff, probably about nine years.

10:23 Adam Wow.

10:24 Slash Wow, look at all the people.

10:25 Adam Yeah, you seem good.

10:27 Slash Thanks.

10:27 Adam You seem sharp.

10:28 Slash Right?

10:28 Adam You're on your game.

11:15 Caller Like on my legs or on my stomach, especially on my legs.

11:19 Caller If it gets anywhere on my thighs, like a major rash. My question is, is that going to be a problem when I try and get pregnant?

11:29 Drew Interesting question. Do you get vaginal irritation too?

11:33 Caller Because I get irritated, he doesn't ever come inside me.

11:37 Drew Do you use condoms all the time?

11:38 Slash Never once?

11:39 Caller It has happened and it does. It gets really irritated.

11:43 Drew And so that's why it's all over you. It's not in the condom, it's just all over the place. Good times.

11:49 Adam So you say he did get some inside of you once and there was irritation?

11:54 Caller Yeah, it's happened more than once, but yes. It's not good when it gets inside.

12:12 Drew It's not the killer sperm, it's the killer semen here actually. It doesn't necessarily equate with fertility problems, but if you have fertility problems, they will get into that, that's for sure. Really? Yeah.

12:24 Adam All right. In the meantime, can you put a ran ramp around yourself or something before you get into it, or use some protection? You know what I mean? Does he have to go on you?

12:54 Caller No. The doctor said she never really heard of it, and she kind of laughed, and she said, I'll get back to you when I find out something.

13:07 Drew Yeah. Usually, yeah.

13:33 I got into an accident last week and I have a back problem. I had back problems before, but it's been really bad since then. I've been getting headaches and nauseated and I don't know if it's from the medicine or just because I have a lot of stress right now.

13:48 Drew What's the medicine?

13:49 It's Scalaxin or something.

13:51 Drew Yeah, the new Muscle Relaxant.

13:53 Yeah.

13:53 Drew There's a lot of side effects from that medicine. I would not be surprised at all.

13:56 I'm supposed to take two, three times a day, and then I'm supposed to take-

13:59 Drew What? You're 19. What's wrong with your back?

14:02 Caller I don't know. I pulled it out before and I had to go to the emergency room because I couldn't really move. It really hurt. It totally sucked. That time, they put me on Vicodin and Naproxen.

14:14 Drew Look, is your back pain kick up when you're stressed? Honestly, is that really the big issue when you really have a lot of depression and stress? That's when the back really kicks up. I don't know.

14:23 Caller I've just noticed that it just goes away and comes. I don't really notice.

14:27 Drew Adam, you had this when you were depressed.

14:29 Adam Yeah.

14:29 Caller Because-

14:30 Adam Thanks, Drew. Well, now my back's starting to hurt.

14:32 Drew Well, you can set her straight. If I just say it happens, it won't make sense to her.

14:37 Adam Listen, Andrew, you need to stretch and do some yoga and start thinking happy thoughts.

14:42 Caller Well, I was given physical exercises to do and stuff. I mean, they feel good at the time, but it hurts later.

14:50 Adam I'm just saying, if at age 19, your back keeps going out and you're getting on to painkillers and muscle relaxers, it's going to be a long haul because this stuff shouldn't crop up at 19.

15:01 Drew That's right.

15:01 Caller Well, I stopped taking them because I got them last Thursday.

15:07 Drew Yeah, but the point is look into how there might be an emotional basis to some of this. I'm not saying there is not a musculoskeletal also, but you're 19, taking a lot of medication, getting side effects from the medicines, I don't know.

15:16 Adam Drew, what percentage of people that have like bad backs are just kind of nuts, depressed, or hooked on painkillers? What percentage?

15:24 Drew I don't know the percentage.

15:26 Adam Percentage under age 35.

15:28 Drew Most of the ones that call this show.

15:31 Adam Let me say this, Drew. Yeah, go ahead.

15:33 Slash The whole thing was just about stress. There was no physical activity or anything.

15:37 Drew Probably not.

15:38 Adam She said, no, she said she got into a car accident.

15:42 Drew Yeah, but again, it comes and it goes magically and they can't explain why. That's when you start thinking and she's talking about how she's under stress all the time.

15:51 Adam But at 19, you're supposed to be able to be floating on a pool raft and have a buddy do a cannonball into your stomach.

15:58 Drew That's right.

15:59 Adam And be fine. Both come out. And have enough energy to beat the ass out of him. So getting rear-ended at six miles an hour is not supposed to ruin you for life. But what do these muscle relaxants do, Drew?

16:12 Drew Some of them, they don't know, actually. And some of them are rather sedating. And the Schalexon is one of the new ones. It's got a lot of side effects to it. And for 19-year-old views, and that seems a little bit extreme to me.

16:20 Adam Does it just kind of relax you? Or does it actually do something to your muscles?

16:24 Drew No, it actually loosens the muscle contractile for us. Yeah.

16:27 Adam Well, I got to get me some of them. Patti?

17:51 Adam Yeah, Oriola. Well let's call it the hub and the wheel. The hub is the center part and then the wheel goes around it or we'll say the tire goes around it. That will represent the Oriola. Now when you say pinch you in the nipples, I picture him pinching you in the hub.

18:10 Caller Right. Sometimes the whole wheel as you call it.

18:15 Drew Well he can hurt you that way. Listen, any sort of woman, any lumps under there really need to be checked down. Your 32, 32 year olds do get breast cancer. Maybe you just think it's the pinching, but maybe there's something going on there.

18:26 Adam It doesn't seem like his pinching would do it. I mean, is he doing it all the time?

18:31 Adam Why don't you kick him in the nuts?

18:37 Slash Tell him to stop doing it and also check the lump out, too, to make sure there's nothing else.

18:46 Drew Well, you can scar and you can get little inflammations, mastitis back there, but more importantly, you want to make sure it's not a tumor.

18:51 Slash You can get addicted to it.

18:52 Drew You want to make sure it's not a tumor. The tumor wouldn't be caused by the pinching, it's just something you notice because of the pinching.

It's always weird excusing yourself to take a leak when there's eight or ten guys who are like sitting around a big board table. It's about an hour later and you think to yourself, holy Christ, I got to take another leak because I didn't get out that pot of coffee I drank on the way in, and you're thinking, no way, I'm not getting up again because it's weird now. Like now I'm going for my second leak.

23:37 Slash And he was singing from up there and I was playing guitar down below. And I had my eyes shut and all of a sudden I felt this big gush of wind and then there was this thud. And the hydraulics had failed on this thing. And finally the back of hydraulics caught him just about at the bottom.

23:54 Adam Right. So he fell 30 feet or something?

23:56 Slash A good 30 feet or so.

23:57 Adam You know, I was watching the Madonna concert.

24:00 Slash But he finished the show and everything.

24:01 Adam And he didn't break anything or anything?

24:03 Slash No. But it was pretty hair raising.

24:05 Adam You got to figure, like I was thinking when I was watching this Madonna concert last week on HBO, she's got the cables and she's flying around like a crouching tiger, hidden dragon. And I'm thinking to myself, with all the pyrotechnics and all the cables going on now and all the hydraulics and everything, something's going to go wrong one of these times for one of these acts. And when it does go wrong, it's going to be like a plane crashing. I mean, it's going to be a big deal.

24:33 Slash Usually the pyrotechnics are the first ones to get you, the flashpots. You remember what happened to James Hedfield in Metallica, right?

24:40 Adam Yeah, he got nailed and Michael Jackson caught on fire at the Pepsi commercial.

24:45 Slash If they hadn't had a backup hydraulic for this thing, I mean, he would have been gone. It would have happened way too fast and too far down.

1:05:03 Drew It's one of the ones that's good for OCD. Prozac actually is probably the most powerful for that. Luvox is another one, but Paxil can be too. All the serotoninreptic inhibiting drugs do have some activity for OCD. What do you do? Pull your hair or something?

And that really shows how intense your emotional distress is, that you really have nothing else to manage this with other than cutting on yourself. 1:12:30 Slash We did four shows at the Coliseum in 1989 and 1990.

1:12:37 Slash It was actually, it was a serious, it was like one of those things where for us, it was us going down the tubes and then getting back up. You know what I mean? It's like, instead of getting up there and going downhill, we were going downhill when we got up there. You know what I'm saying? We broke up on the first show, managed to do the second show, then made up again on the third show, and then managed to do the fourth show and kept going from there.

And so when somebody drops out, you just leave the other guy hanging. It starts to, a lot of the ill feelings start to collect between the guys.

1:13:52 Adam Well, would some of the stuff happen just from on stage performance, like somebody missed a beat or screwed something up or?

1:13:59 Slash Well, that's not that big a deal. That's just what you call making, making mistake you try not to do and if it happens, it happens. But when it's walking off stage or decide you don't want to play this song all of a sudden in the set or whatever, it's something that really affects all the other people in the group, then you got a problem.

1:25:59 Caller And play Hollywood and everything. And I was wondering how we can get record companies to look at our band.

1:26:05 Slash Well, every band is asking that same question in some way, shape or form. I don't know, start a buzz in LA. You know, if you think, well, that's where all the record companies are anyway. So if you got a good following in Los Angeles, you're bound to get some A&R people coming by and checking you out. And you know, the other way is to actually get in touch with different record companies and try and get some interest in a showcase or something like that.

1:26:30 Adam Will A&R guys go to the whiskey and go to the Troubadour just on random weekend nights or weeknights?

1:26:37 Slash You know, there's no formula for it, but usually they're supposed to be out there scouting if they're worth their weight and something.

1:26:43 Adam What happened? What's the Guns N Roses story with that?

1:26:46 Slash That was a word of mouth, but we'd basically gotten such a huge following in LA that it was hard to ignore the fact that when we played on a weekend, all of a sudden it would be pretty much chaotic or something like we're playing at the Roxy. So record company people would come down and check us out. But we were so notorious for being just unruly that we scared a lot of record companies off. But one guy in particular from Geffen, which is Tom Zutthot, stuck it in there and actually had the balls to sign us. It was the worst thing ever. Against the record companies, but it was the best wishes. Really?

1:27:23 Slash Yeah.

1:27:24 Adam All right. Well, LA is the place and you can hone your skills over there in Bakersfield, but you got to come out here and get your following.

1:27:31 Slash Yeah, because you can send demos.

1:27:34 Slash Right. Well, the coconut teaser is a dive for the most part. I don't know. I haven't been there in a while. But sending demos and all that stuff doesn't hurt.

1:28:04 Caller I'm a really big fan of Slash, and I've been a big fan of Guns N Roses for like two years, and I was wondering if your new music is anything like Guns N Roses, like if it's the same sound or what?

1:28:19 Slash Well, my guitar sound is the same. For the most part, I use the same gear and all that stuff, and my approach is the same. But of course, Guns N Roses is a combination of five people, and that five people makes a certain sound. And so anything that I get involved with, the end result sounds like me with four other complete different individuals. So the overall sound is different, but the one common thread in there is my guitar sound.

1:29:15 Caller Slash, I'm a musician and you're a big inspiration. Adam, you're just fricking hilarious. I don't know.

1:29:24 Caller I've been watching The Man Show for as long as I can remember. And Drew, I just listen to a lot of you do and I take a lot of what you say to heart, and it helps me. Yeah, exactly. And I have a question. There's this girl that I was seeing for a year. And through the entire time that we were going out, she kind of was manipulative of what I was and who I was. And she was trying to take control of my life. And she kind of led me on to this assumption that we were always going to be together and everything. And I knew, all right, at 16, it's just a load of BS. And now she's stalking you. Actually, no, now that I got another girl, she's a, she's, she, we got in a fight the other day and she called my parents telling me that I had got my girlfriend to chase her down and run her down and trying to get her out of my life. And when I told my parents the story, she basically, she was, she, when I didn't get in trouble, she was like, all right, so she went to my teachers about it.

1:30:27 Adam All right, but listen, you're not having any kind of relationship with her anymore, right?

1:30:32 Caller No, no, no, I mean, there's times when she'll come up to me and she'll say, I'm sorry for what happened. And she'll try and, and like, and.

1:30:40 Adam Okay, but you're not in, you're not into her anymore?

1:30:44 Caller I mean, I kind of am. I mean, they're always feeling for it.

1:30:47 Slash There's always a tricky part to the agreement.

1:30:49 Adam Here's the deal, Robert. You can't dance with her at all. If she's nutty, she's chaotic, and if you want her out of your life, you've got to keep her out of your life.

1:30:59 Caller She's got really big problems like her dad.

1:31:01 Drew Yeah, we get that.

1:31:02 Adam We understand all that. And so here's the deal. If you give her a little servicing once every other month, that's going to keep her in your life.

1:31:11 Slash It keeps fueling the fire.

1:31:13 Adam Right. Even if you, it's like it resets the calendar back to zero.

1:31:18 Drew That's right.

1:31:18 Adam So you've got to be strong and you've got to be firm. And if you don't want her in your life, you've got to keep her out. And if you do that, she'll get distracted and get bored and get out pretty quick. But if you renew this dance every couple of weeks, then she's going to want to dance.

1:31:36 Caller I mean, I don't want to be a dick about it. I mean, we've built up such a friendship.

1:31:40 Adam Such a friendship. She's calling your parents saying your girlfriend tried to run her over.

1:31:44 Caller Yeah.

1:31:45 Adam What kind of friendship is that?

1:31:46 Caller I know. And it's a bad situation. I just, I don't know.

1:31:50 Adam All right. But let me... Robert, listen, understand this concept because I think Drew knows it well and I'm sure Slash knows it better than any of us, which is some women are chaotic and they need chaos and they need that. It's like guys who get into fights every weekend. It's never their fault that just some a-hole at the bar started it, but yet it's the same dude getting into the same fray every single weekend. They need it, they may not like it, but they need it. That's what their life is. So you are going to get into this with her every week for the rest of your life. If you don't just, cold turkey, she calls, you hang up. You see her in school, you turn down the other hall. That's it and it'll go away pretty fast, but you can't keep renewing it.
